§ Mr. John Maxton (Glasgow, Cathcart)On a point of order, Mr. Speaker. During last week's statement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer I asked about the effect on housing in Scotland, and he said that it was a matter for the Secretary of State for Scotland. I wonder whether the Secretary of State—or the Leader of the House—has given you notice that he will make a statement this week on the effects of the financial statement on Scotland.
§ Mr. SpeakerI have had no such request.
§ Mr. MaxtonFurther to that point of order, Mr. Speaker.
§ Mr. SpeakerThere is not much more to be said.
§ Mr. MaxtonMay I say, to protect Scottish Members, that on several occasions statements on Scotland have been made by the Secretary of State in reply to written questions or to planted oral questions. You will know, Mr. Speaker, that an early-day motion on the issue has been put down by my hon. Friend the Member for Glasgow, Garscadden (Mr. Dewar). Would it be possible to call a Speaker's Conference to consider how Scottish affairs should be organised, both in the House and outside?
§ Mr. SpeakerI doubt very much whether that is a appropriate matter for me. The Leader of the House is present and I am sure he will have heard what has been said.
