HC Deb 21 November 1983 vol 49 c13
18. Mr. Allan Rogers

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will give details of local government aid to the coal industry in Wales.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

That is a matter for individual local authorities. Detailed information is not available centrally.

Mr. Rogers

Is it not strange that the south Wales coal industry should have to compete with European Community industries, which are heavily subsidised by local government?

Mr. Edwards

Under section 137 of the Local Government Act 1972 local authorities have power to assist industry. My consent is not required. The coal industry may also benefit from other social and economic assistance provided generally by local authorities.
