HC Deb 09 May 1983 vol 42 cc622-3
15. Mr. Welsh

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what tasks he has set for the new chairman of the National Coal Board.

Mr. John Moore

His tasks reflect the objectives set for the present chairman, Norman Siddall, to return the industry to profitability as soon as possible by securing the highest possible efficiency and control of costs so that the coal industry may develop new markets for British coal and compete successfully in the market place.

Mr. Welsh

Will the Minister pass on our regards to the new chairman and convey to him that his next important task will be to find another new house in America, because he will be going back there shortly after the next election?

Mr. Moore

On reflection, I do not think that the hon. Gentleman will be very pleased with what he said. He and I share a passionate interest in the success of the coal industry, and I am sure that he would wish the new chairman well. However, he does not take office until 1 September. Norman Siddall will be looking forward to further meetings with the new Conservative Government after the next election.
