HC Deb 05 May 1983 vol 42 cc383-4
4. Mr. Allan Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether instructions have been issued to chief executives of local authorities to be based within a certain radius of a nuclear shelter.

Mr. Mayhew

No, Sir.

Mr. Roberts

Will the Minister explain why the metropolitan borough of Sefton is spending £l million to move the chief executive's office from Bootle to leafy Southport to be near the nuclear fall-out bunker so that, when the four-minute warning comes, he can get there, but the people of Bootle cannot? Is he aware that it is a waste of money because, when last there was a practice run, he arrived without the key, the caretaker had to be sent for and he arrived an hour later on a bicycle?

Mr. Mayhew

That just goes to show the value of exercises. I hope that the hon. Gentleman will do all that he can to drive home the importance of that lesson.
