HC Deb 18 March 1983 vol 39 c447 9.35 am
Mr. Nigel Spearing (Newham, South)

By arrangement with my hon. Friend the Member for Ilkeston (Mr. Fletcher), I beg leave to present this petition, signed by over 3,000 electors of that constituency: To the Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled. The humble petition of those whose names are hereunto appended, being electors of the constituency of Ilkeston. Sheweth that they are seriously and increasingly damaged by reason of the membership of the United Kingdom in the European Economic Community, in as much as, in particular, the burden of their taxation is increased by the contribution of the United Kingdom to the budget of the said Community, that the rules of the said Community increase the cost of their food, that restrictions are placed upon their trade with the inhabitants of countries outside the said Community and that by membership aforesaid they are deprived of their right to obey only such laws and to pay only such taxes as are by Parliament sanctioned. Wherefore your petitioners pray that the Act intituled the European Communities Act 1972 be so far amended, to include the repeal of Section Two of the said Act, as may be necessary for their relief from the aforementioned grievances. And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray that the European Communities Act 1972 be so amended.

To lie upon the Table.
