HC Deb 21 February 1983 vol 37 c649
4. Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Minister for Trade whether he will review the operation of the Competition Act 1980.

Dr. Vaughan

I have no present plans to do so.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

Will the Minister amend the Competition Act 1980 to define precisely what is an anticompetitive practice? Is not the solicitors' monopoly on conveyancing an anti-competitive practice? Are not the Law Society's rules preventing solicitors from advertising a form of anti-competitive practice? Do they not both act against the public interest? Will the Government do something about it?

Dr. Vaughan

We have no plans at the moment to alter the Act. If the hon. Gentleman wishes to raise points where he believes that there are difficulties, I should be glad to look into them. I should say that the present Government have done more to extend competitiveness and to improve trade in that area than any previous Government.
