§ 4. Mr. Campbell-Savoursasked the Minister for Trade whether he will review the operation of the Competition Act 1980.
§ Dr. VaughanI have no present plans to do so.
§ Mr. Campbell-SavoursWill the Minister amend the Competition Act 1980 to define precisely what is an anticompetitive practice? Is not the solicitors' monopoly on conveyancing an anti-competitive practice? Are not the Law Society's rules preventing solicitors from advertising a form of anti-competitive practice? Do they not both act against the public interest? Will the Government do something about it?
§ Dr. VaughanWe have no plans at the moment to alter the Act. If the hon. Gentleman wishes to raise points where he believes that there are difficulties, I should be glad to look into them. I should say that the present Government have done more to extend competitiveness and to improve trade in that area than any previous Government.
