HC Deb 17 February 1983 vol 37 cc457-8
9. Sir Hector Monro

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will take steps further to promote British dairy products, in view of the recent drop in butter consumption.

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Mr. Peter Walker)

I take every suitable opportunity to support British dairy products, which are of high quality and excellent value.

Sir Hector Monro

Does my right hon. Friend agree that the truly outstanding success of his Food from Britain presentation yesterday is that it has made an excellent platform for exports? Is it not now up to the industry to grasp the opportunity, always bearing in mind that quality must be its trade mark?

Mr. Walker

I am grateful to my hon. Friend for his remarks about yesterday's launch. Comparing the records of Denmark, Holland, France and Germany with our minor exports of cheese to those countries, there is enormous scope for improvement. I am glad to say it is beginning to happen, but a great deal of progress needs to be made.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

Is not our attitude to our French friends about milk based on deception and deceit, and is that not unworthy of the British people?

Mr. Walker

No, Sir; it is based on hygiene.

Mr. Watson

Does my right hon. Friend agree that the development of Lymeswold cheese has been a significant marketing success? Is he aware that it is still not sufficiently available in some parts of the country? Could it be that his dog is eating too much?

Mr. Walker

I am glad to say that the producers are now substantially increasing production of Lymeswold cheese. They are investing substantially, putting in a new production line and creating new jobs. That is typical of this type of success.

Mr. Allen McKay

Does the Secretary of State consider that the employers' ham-handed approach to industrial relations in the water dispute and Government interference have caused farmers many difficulties, particularly in relation to milk yield? What compensation will be available for farmers for the loss of milk?

Mr. Walker

No, Sir. I regret that industrial action was taken when arbitration was open to the water workers many months ago.
