HC Deb 28 January 1982 vol 16 c989
3. Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a further statement on the future of the Liverpool to Belfast ferry service.

The Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (Mr. David Mitchell)

I understand that Irish Continental Line, who intend promoting a new company to be registered in the United Kingdom, have been having detailed discussions with trade union representatives and the two port authorities. Other potential operators remain interested. I am hopeful that a new service will shortly be established on a commercial basis.

Mr. Parry

I welcome what the Minister said, but will he assure the House that this ship will sail under a British flag and be manned by British seamen, and that priority in employment will be given to the seamen who were made redundant following the closure of the P and O ferry? Will he also maintain close contact with the National Union of Seamen?

Mr. Mitchell

I understand that ICL intends to promote a new company registered in the United Kingdom. The ships will fly the British flag and employ NUS members. The decision as to which seamen will be employed is a matter for negotiation between the company and the men.
