HC Deb 23 February 1982 vol 18 cc733-4
4. Mr. Ron Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will compensate Mrs. Galbraith for the Royal Navy's loss of her late brother's medallion.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces (Mr. Jerry Wiggin)

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Brown

Although I welcome the Minister's statement—such as it is—I still do not know what it means. Does not this matter need further investigation? Surely the Minister must ask Commander England, the officer concerned, what happened to the medallion. Did it go into someone's private collection, or was it honestly lost? In such circumstances, what does the Royal Navy do? This is not a small matter, but a matter of principle—

Mr. Speaker

Order. That is enough questions for the Minister to get on with.

Mr. Wiggin

If we knew what had happened to the medallion, I should not have to apologise for its loss, as I sincerely do. We have made inquiries of all the officers and all those who might know anything about it, but I am afraid that the medallion is lost.
