HC Deb 17 February 1982 vol 18 cc374-5

10. 14 pm

Mr. Greville Janner (Leicester, West)

I have the honour to present to the House the Dundee petition sponsored by my hon. Friend the Member for Dunfermline (Mr. Douglas), the hon. Members for Perth and East Perthshire (Mr. Walker) and Dundee, East (Mr. Wilson) and myself and signed by 5, 000 citizens, including 150 Members in the House and in the other place. It reads as follows: The Humble Petition of citizens and leaders of political, religious and civic life in the United Kingdom and especially in the City of Dundee, together with the Honorary Officers and Member of the Board of Deputies of British Jews and other leaders of the Jewish community sheweth that the twinning of the City of Dundee with the town of Nablus and the hanging of the flag of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation in the entrance to the Dundee council chamber is an act which has caused grievous anguish to the loyal Jewish citizens of Dundee as well as to men and women of good will and of all faiths who deplore this association with a body which is openly and consistently, by its covenant and by its actions, devoted to the destruction of the Jewish State of Israel and to employing methods of terror for its purposes; which actions led to the first anti-semitic outrages in the long, happy and tolerant history of the City of Dundee and in particular to fascist daubings"— observed by hon. Members— including the desecration of the Dundee Synagogue; wherefore your Petitioners pray that your Honourable House persuade the Dundee district council to revoke the said twinning with the town of Nablus and do remove the said flag of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. The observing of that desecration was after it happened and not at the time. And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray. To lie upon the Table.
