§ 21. Mr. Greenwayasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what discussions he has had with the trustees of the national heritage fund about its annual grant.
§ Mr. ChannonI am in regular contact with the fund, which I believe is doing a splendid job.
§ Mr. GreenwayMay I congratulate my right hon. Friend and others concerned with the fund on its success? May I also urge the Government to do all that they can to maintain their support for the fund in real terms? Will my right hon. Friend do what he can?
§ Mr. ChannonI shall do all that I can. I cannot give an absolute guarantee in a difficult time. I share my hon. Friend's enthusiasm for the fund's work. I believe that that feeling is generally shared throughout the House.
§ Mr. Christopher PriceOn an issue that has been put to the Minister before, does he agree that the fund should not be mean or narrow in its objectives and that all sorts of proposals such as railway viaducts—in particular Ribblehead—should qualify? What progress has been made on the proposal?
§ Mr. ChannonI have written to my hon. Friend the Member for Christchurch and Lymington (Mr. Adley) about that matter. If I am allowed, I shall ensure that the hon. Gentleman receives the correspondence. It is for the board to make an approach to the trustees if it wishes.
