HC Deb 01 February 1982 vol 17 cc13-4
16. Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Trade whether there has been any change in the Export Credits Guarantee Department facilities provided in respect of the order by the State of Jos in Nigeria for 1,400 Leyland tractors, manufactured at Bathgate.

Mr. Peter Rees

It is not the practice to give commercial information about the cover given by the Export Credits Guarantee Department on particular contracts, the details of which are confidential as between the parties.

Mr. Dalyell

Will the Government consider, if Leyland approaches them, extending cover for this order for tractors, which is desperately needed to keep this factory open until negotiations can take place between the unions and the company?

Mr. Rees

I am sure that the Export Credits Guarantee Department will take full account of special circumstances that are put to it. As the hon. Gentleman is aware, the Export Credits Guarantee Department has to balance its books and views these matters in a commercial light. I shall ensure that any special factors in the mind of the hon. Gentleman are also in the department's mind before any fresh applications are considered.
