§ Order for Second Reading read.
§ Motion made, and Question proposed, That the Bill be now read a Second time.—[Mr. Jopling.]
9.42 am§ Mr. Christopher Murphy (Welwyn and Hatfield)I add my support to this consolidation Bill, as a Member of Parliament having the honour to represent two new towns—Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield. I believe that this New Towns Bill will prove helpful.
A large number of measures relating to new towns have been enacted between 1959 and 1980. Consolidating such a plethora of legislation is a highly desirable development. All the legislative provisions relating to the Commission for the New Towns and the New Town Development Corporation will now be consolidated into one Act, which will be advantageous to the Government in fulfilling their intention to sell their assets and abolish those bodies.
I therefore welcome the Bill, which will be of assistance to all those involved with new towns. I urge the Government to make use of this measure in speedily achieving their objectives.
Question put and agreed to.
Bill accordingly read a Second time.
Bill committed to a Committee of the whole House.—[Mr. Goodlad.]
Committee upon Monday next.
