HC Deb 13 April 1981 vol 3 cc12-3
15. Mr. Neubert

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what is the total value, for the most recent 12-month period for which figures are available, of exports to and imports from South America, respectively.

Mr. Parkinson

In the period February 1980 to January 1981 the value of United Kingdom exports to Latin America was £1,048 million, and the corresponding value of imports was £988 million.

Mr. Neubert

In the light of those figures, will my right hon. Friend welcome the arrival of Inchcape on the South American scene and the negotiation of the Tate and Lyle sugar project in Peru as an indication of the markets that remain to be recaptured in South America and the great good will that exists for us there?

Mr. Parkinson

My hon. Friend is correct. We have a very small share of that market, which I believe has enormous growth potential. That is why the Government are encouraging British industry and are mounting a special effort to back it up in trying to improve its share of the market.
