asked the Lord Privy Seal what will be the cost to public funds during the current year of the Commonwealth Development Corporation.

Subject to parliamentary approval, provision for advances to CDC from the aid programme this financial year will be £30 million.

Will my hon. Friend pay tribute to the work of the Commonwealth Development Corporation, which is widely admired in Britain and throughout the world? Does he envisage any possibility of extending its role?

I paid tribute to the CDC in an Adjournment debate recently. We shall always be prepared to consider extending the role of the CDC when we are in a position to do so
