HC Deb 21 May 1980 vol 985 cc494-5
15. Mr. Bevan

asked the Minister of Transport how many public service vehicles are currently licensed by the traffic commissioners.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

For the year ending 31 March 1979, the number of PSV licences granted by the traffic commissioners was 75,320.

Mr. Bevan

What annual reduction is expected in the number of licences to be issued by the traffic commissioners when the Transport Bill is enacted?

Mr. Clarke

The legislation will change the system. We shall go over to operators' licences. We shall not licence individual vehicles. The Act will improve the quality of transport services in many parts of the country. It will provide great opportunities to existing and new operators to develop their present services and to introduce better services than are at present found in many areas.
