HC Deb 14 March 1980 vol 980 cc1821-4

Amendment proposed, No. 88, in page 4, line 1, leave out from beginning to end of line 7.—[Mr. Mikardo.]

Question put, That the amendment be made.

The House proceeded to a Division

2 pm

Sir Bernard Braine

(seated and covered): On a point of order, Mr. Deputy Speaker. May I draw your attention to the fact that some hon. Members are quite deliberately languishing in the Lobbies in the knowledge that by holding up the proceedings in that way the House will not be able to proceed to a vote, which the overwhelming majority of hon. Members wish to have.

Mr. Deputy Speaker (Mr. Richard Crawshaw)

If hon. Members are not

passing through the Lobbies as speedily as they should, that is wrong, and the necessary inquiries should be made. It is not a matter for me at the moment.

Mr. Eric Ogden (Liverpool, West Derby)

(seated and covered): Further to that point of order, Mr. Deputy Speaker. I was one of those who was languishing in the Aye Lobby. I do not know whether the hon. Member for Essex. South-East (Sir B. Braine) was referring to me, because he did not specify to which Lobby he was referring. Since I was one of the last to go through the Lobby I did so with the greatest expedition that I could manage. Perhaps Southendus sciaticus had something to do with it. No one, to my knowledge, has been languishing in the Lobbies. There are better places to languish.

Mr. Deputy Speaker

I am not clear whether the languishing has finished. If it has not, I hope that it will be drawn to my attention immediately and I shall take measures.
