HC Deb 08 July 1980 vol 988 c224
7. Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what he is doing to study the comparative pay of technicians working for universities, with those of outside industry.

Dr. Boyson

A comparative study of the pay of university technicians has been referred to the Standing Commission on pay comparability, and a report is expected by the end of the month.

Mr. Dalyell

Does the Minister consider that technicians' pay awards should be determined by cash limits, or by pay comparability?

Dr. Boyson

I do not know what the report will say. I know the hon. Gentleman's concern. It is important that universities have proper laboratory back-up. We have tried to hasten the report. When we have it, we shall consider the matter further.
