HC Deb 03 July 1980 vol 987 cc1917-8
Mr. Fox

I beg to move amendment No. 44, in page 9, line 1, leave out from 'accounts' to second 'as' in line 2.

This is a purely drafting amendment, to simplify the Bill.

Amendment agreed to.

Mr. Fox

I beg to move amendment No. 45, in page 9, line 17, leave out from 'means' to end of line 22 and insert: 'means—

  1. (a) construction and maintenance work for the purpose of the laying out, construction, improvement, maintenance or repair of highways, other than work for the purpose of the construction of highways which is connected with the carrying out of other works of new construction and
  2. 1918
  3. (b) the gritting of, or clearing of snow from highways.'.

Mr. Deputy Speaker (Mr. Bernard Weatherill)

With this it will be convenient to take Government amendment No. 50.

Mr. Fox

The amendment fulfils the undertaking that we gave in Committee to remove cleansing from the definition of general highways work in clause 8 and thus to reconcile it with the primary definition of construction and maintenance work in clause 17. We have taken the opportunity at the same time to make a purely drafting change to improve the presentation of the definitions by separating what is called winter maintenance—gritting and snow clearance—from construction and maintenance of property.

Amendment No. 50 is a purely drafting amendment.

Amendment agreed to.
