HC Deb 19 November 1979 vol 974 cc33-4
Mr. William Hamilton

On a point of order, Mr. Speaker. My point of order is not on the question that I raised last Friday but is closely related to what has just happened, and I seek your guidance. I understand that when there is a motion for debate on the Adjournment of the House we cannot discuss legislation. Can you give us an assurance that we shall be able to discuss the Protection of Official Information Bill in the debate on Wednesday?

Mr. Speaker

The House will be aware that normally in an Adjournment debate we cannot ask for legislation. However, Standing Order No. 16 lays down that Notwithstanding the practice of the House which prohibits in a debate on a motion for the adjournment of the House any reference to matters requiring legislative remedy, Mr. Speaker may permit such incidental reference to legislative action as he may consider relevant to any matter of administration then under debate when enforcement of the prohibition would, in his opinion, unduly restrict the discussion of such matter.
