May I ask you about what seems to be a new practice that has developed in recent weeks, which does not seem to me to add to the elegance of our proceedings? I refer to the manner in which occupants of the Opposition Front Bench seem to indulge in the practice of raising their hands to catch your eye, as if they were seeking access to the toilet. Is there any good reason why right hon. and hon. Members on the Opposition Front Bench should not seek to catch your eye like the rest of us, by rising in their places?
§ Mr. SpeakerI believe that it was Stanley Baldwin who said that Mr. Speaker's eye was the most elusive object in the world. All sorts of devices are used by hon. Members to catch my eye, but as yet I have not seen anyone hold up his hand.
