HC Deb 28 March 1979 vol 965 cc456-7
28. Mr. John H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what discussions he, the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, or any of the advisory committees responsible to him, has had with the South Yorkshire county council and the Sheffield city council about traffic reorganisation schemes for the A57 and other roads to the suburbs at Broomhill, in the Hallam division of Sheffield; and whether the present schemes under discussion have had his approval.

Mr. Horam

The only discussions of which I am aware are those we have had with the South Yorkshire county council about traffic signals which would be required should the council decide to proceed with its proposed traffic management scheme at Broomhill. Following those discussions which concerned the signals layout and operation which would be employed, approval in principle was given last summer.

Mr. Osborn

Is it not a fact that Sheffield district council is objecting to the proposals put forward by the Yorkshire county council? Will his right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment be holding an inquiry? Will he be in a position to give evidence?

Mr. Horam

I do not think that that is the intention. It is a matter wholly for the county council.
