asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will take steps to end the current practice whereby a married woman's income is deemed to be that of her husband.

I am considering this matter and will be making a statement in due course.

When my hon. and learned Friend makes that statement will he jettison this antiquated Victorian principle and put the matter on a proper basis, once and for all?

Mr. Rees

If and when the statement is made we shall be considering both antiquated Georgian and Victorian principles.
