HC Deb 14 December 1979 vol 975 cc1716-838
Mr. Archie Hamilton (Epsom and Ewell)

Mr. Speaker, may I present a petition on behalf of 3,000 petitioners in the constituency of Epsom and Ewell and that of my hon. Friend the Member for Twickenham (Mr. Jessel)?

The purpose of the petition is to speed up the completion of the M25 because many people in my constituency and in Twickenham suffer desperately from the amount of heavy traffic now being routed through their area so that it may get to other motorways, and indeed to the M1 Therefore, we are urging the Secretary of State to move as quickly as possible with the completion of the south-west and western sections of the M25, which the petitioners believe will make their lives much more bearable.

The petition reads:

To the Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled.

The Humble Petition from we the under-signed sheweth,

  1. 1. That intolerable environmental conditions are created by the enormous and ever-increasing traffic flow along the routes marked on the attached map and on the roads adjacent thereto.
  2. 2. That according to vehicle counts in recent years, this traffic has substantially increased since the partial completion of the M25 eastwards of Reigate Hill, since when these routes now provide the link between South-East England and the Channel ports, and three motorways to the north and west of England, in addition to the Heathrow-Gatwick airports traffic.

Wherefore your Petitioners humbly pray that this Honourable House will expedite the completion of the M25 motorway section from Reigate Hill at least as far as the M4 motorway.

And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray, etc.

To lie upon the Table.
