HC Deb 17 March 1978 vol 946 c827
Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson (Newbury)

With your permission, Mr. Speaker, and that of the House, I beg leave to present a petition bearing the names of 16,613 persons, most of whom are from my constituency, against the proposal of the United States authorities to reactivate RAF Greenham Common as a tanker aircraft base.

The petition states: To the Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled. The Humble Petition of the citizens of:

Aldermaston Greenham
Bradfield Hampstead Marshall
Brimpton Headley
Bucklebury Kintbury
Burghclere Newbury
Chievely Newtown
Coldash Penwood
Crookham Tadley
Donnington Thatcham
East Woodhay Woolhampton
Ecchinswell
Sheweth
That the bringing back to full operational use of RAF Greenham Common by the United States Air Force would, by means of the intolerable aircraft noise and the constant fear of a disastrous accident, unwarrantably degrade the quality of life for many thousands of the inhabitants of the area. Wherefore your Petitioners pray that your Honourable House oppose any suggestion that RAF Greenham Common should be brought back into operational use. And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.

To lie upon the Table.
