§ 18. Mr. Michael Lathamasked the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has to alleviate traffic problems in Quorn and Mountsorrel, Leicestershire, along the A6 road; and whether he has any new plans for a bypass round those villages.
§ Mr. HoramFollowing a recent assessment of the A6 through Quorn and Mountsorrel, we propose to carry out a series of improvements to the existing road. Four of these will be completed by April 1979. There are no new plans for a bypass of either village.
§ Mr. LathamIs the Minister aware that the serious and growing problems of these communities through traffic can be solved not by minor improvements but only by a new bypass? Will he discuss this matter urgently with the Leicestershire County Council, as it is currently reviewing its transport policy programme?
§ Mr. HoramI cannot undertake to discuss the matter urgently. The kind of improvements which we are now about to implement will answer some of the problems which the hon. Gentleman legitimately raises. Certainly there have been far too many accidents, for example, in the two villages. The kind of improvements that we are about to make to junctions are designed to reduce the number of accidents, which have mainly taken place at junctions.
§ Mr. SkinnerWhile he is about it, will my hon. Friend look into the question of possible road congestion between this House and Epsom, because, according to the attendance today, many hon. Members must be making their way there?
