HC Deb 03 July 1978 vol 953 cc26-7
37. Mr. Onslow

asked the Lord President of the Council what consultations were held before a decision was taken that Badge Messengers of the House should wear new summer uniforms.

Mr. Foot

My office was consulted before the decision was taken.

Mr. Onslow

If the Lord President thinks that an Eton jacket is a suitable working uniform for a grown man, will he tell us when we may have the pleasure of seeing him turn up here in one himself? In the meantime, will he confirm that, if the Badge Messengers have strong views on the matter, it is open to them to make representations to the effect that the uniform should be withdrawn?

Mr. Foot

The Badge Messengers can make any representations they wish. The matter was only proceeded with because the Serjeant at Arms had consultations with them and with Mr. Speaker. As for the first part of the hon. Gentleman's supplementary question, I think that the House will treat it with the derision it deserves.
