HC Deb 30 January 1978 vol 943 cc5-6
3. Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if he will refer to the Price Commission the price margins in the sale of table wine.

The Under-Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection (Mr. Robert Maclennan)

No, Sir.

Mr. Price

Is the Minister aware that taxation represents more than 40 per cent. of the retail price of ordinary table wine—"plonk", in ordinary terms? Is he also aware that since the Labour Government came to power the taxation on "plonk" has increased by 333 per cent? That is the Treasury figure. What does the hon. Gentleman propose to do about it?

Mr. Maclennan

Questions about the level of duty are a matter for my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
