HC Deb 30 January 1978 vol 943 c207

11.56 p.m.

Mr. Greville Janner (Leicester, West)

I beg leave to present a petition signed by hundreds of thousands of citizens, representative of many millions, asking that men should have equal rights with women in connection with retirement.

The petition, with signatures collected by my hon. Friend the Member for Preston, North (Mr. Atkins) and myself over the past 18 months, reads as follows: To the Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled. The Humble Petition of Citizens of the United Kingdom Showeth That women now have equal rights before the law; That women, whose expectation of life exceeds that of men, are entitled to retire at 60; but That men must work until they are 65, to receive a pension and That the said discrimination between men and women is unjust and lacks both reason and compassion. Wherefore your Petitioners pray that your Honourable House will do all within its power to ensure that men do receive the same right as women to retire, if they wish, on pension at the age of 60. And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will every pray, etc. To lie upon the Table.
