HC Deb 17 April 1978 vol 948 cc3-4
3. Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection how many staff within his Department hold banking or insurance qualifications.

Mr. Maclennan

As far as I know, none of the Department's staff is a member of the Institute of Bankers, the Chartered Insurance Institute, the Institute of Actuaries or the Faculty of Actuaries.

Mr. Viggers

In view of the disaster area represented by the Minister's tinkering with bread prices, will he keep as far away as possible from banking and insurance in order to enable free enterprise to continue to do such a good job?

Mr. Maclennan

The expertise of the Price Commission in banking is well known, and the report of the Price Commission, following the inquiry into bank charges, is expected to be published tomorrow.
