§ Mr. Ron ThomasOn a point of order, Mr. Speaker. Before we resume the Budget debate may I seek your guidance on Motion No. 8 which will be put to the House later this evening? It contains what I and many of my hon. Friends regard as three fundamental aspects of taxation legislation which in many ways are disparate in the sense that many, if not all, of us would want to vote for paragraph (a) of the motion but, given the opportunity, would vote against paragraph (b) as did 54 of us on a similar occasion 12 months ago. May I suggest that it is most unfair to lump these separate issues together in this way? As guardian of the interests of Back Benchcrs, will you do what you can to give us the opportunity to vote separately on these issues, Mr. Speaker.
§ Mr. SpeakerI have sent the hon. Member a letter, but perhaps he has not yet received it. In it I explain that I am able to call only one amendment. The House draws up the Standing Orders 31 and I must abide by them. The hon. Member will have the opportunity during the Committee stage of the Finance Bill to deal with amendments.
