§ Mr. BowdenI beg to ask leave to move the Adjournment of the House, under Standing Order No. 9, for the purpose of discussing a specific and important matter that should have urgent consideration, namely
the threat to the supply of electrical power caused by the unofficial action of power workers which is endangering life and creating hardship for millions of people.At this moment the lives of many of our constituents are being put at risk. Industry is being disrupted. Travellers are suffering great inconvenience and danger. Criminals are having a bonanza. but, worst of all, the lives of the sick, the elderly and the disabled are being jeopardised. The situation has altered dramatically in the past 72 hours and I submit that it is very urgent that the House should have an opportunity of debating this matter.
§ Mr. SpeakerThe hon. Member gave me notice this morning that he proposed to raise this question and to make the application for an emergency debate under Standing Order No. 9 due to
the threat to the supply of electrical power caused by the unofficial action of power workers which is endangering life and creating hardship for millions of people.As the House knows, I do not decide the importance of an issue—and this, undoubtedly, is a very important issue. I have to decide whether, today or tomorrow, the debate should take precedence over the business of the day. I am afraid that I cannot grant his request.
