HC Deb 21 January 1977 vol 924 c825
Mr. Speaker

Yesterday, the hon. Member for Bolsover (Mr. Skinner) made a complaint on grounds of privilege about a Press release by Aims for Freedom and Enterprise concerning Mr. Attorney-General. I have given careful consideration to that complaint, but I have come to the firm conclusion that it does not raise such issues as would justify me in allowing precedence over the Orders of the Day to a motion concerning it. The hon. Member suggested also that the Press release might constitute a contempt of court. That is not of course a matter for me and I can make no comment.

Mr. Skinner

As I said yesterday, there were two considerations which led me to raise this matter. One was the mere possibility of a breach of privilege, and I had to take the course I took to clear that matter. I took the other course—ensuring that this was sent to the courts—so that people could deal with it there.

Mr. Speaker

I am obliged. Of course, if the hon. Member wishes to send it to the court—

Mr. Skinner

It has gone.

Mr. Speaker

I am obliged: the hon. Gentleman anticipates me time and again.
