HC Deb 09 March 1976 vol 907 c233
7. Mr. Costain

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what annual cost saving will result from reductions in Army equipment as a result of his Defence Review.

Mr. Robert Brown

The annual cost saving resulting from reductions in Army equipment as a result of the Defence Review will rise progressively to an average rate of about £80 million a year by 1980, at the same prices as those used in the Defence Review.

Mr. Costain

Will the Minister give an assurance that these cuts will in no way affect the development of new weapons'? Will he give some indication of how the cuts are split between cuts in personnel expenditure and equipment expenditure?

Mr. Brown

Clearly, some developments will take longer to complete than would otherwise have been the case. I assure the House that modern weapons development will carry on.
