HC Deb 14 June 1976 vol 913 cc32-6
Dr. Boyson

I beg to ask leave to move the Adjournment of the House, under Standing Order No. 9, for the purpose of discussing a specific and important matter that should have urgent consideration, namely, the decision of the Secretary of State for Education and Science to use Section 68 of the Education Act 1944 in Tameside. I believe that the issuing of a directive by the Secretary of State for Education and Science directing the Conservative councillors at Tameside, who won the election on a policy, to reverse their policy despite their victory will mean, if the directive is fought in the courts, as is likely, that parents will not know to which schools their children are going, and there will be indecision in all the schools until September. I urge that this urgent and immediate matter should be debated in the House because of the condition of education in Tameside this September.

Mr. Speaker

The hon. Member for Brent, North (Dr. Boyson) asks leave to move the Adjournment of the House for the purpose of discussing a specific and important matter that he thinks should have urgent consideration, namely, the decision of the Secretary of State for Education and Science to use Section 68 of the Education Act 1944 in Tameside". I am satisfied that the matter raised by the hon. Gentleman is proper to be discussed under Standing Order No. 9. Does the hon. Member have the leave of the House?

The pleasure of the House not having been signfied, Mr. SPEAKER called on those Members who supported the motion to rise in their place and fewer than 40, and not less than 10 Members having accordingly risen, and a Division being claimed—

Question put, That leave be given to move, "That this House do now adjourn":—
