HC Deb 07 June 1976 vol 912 c898
10. Mr. Hal Miller

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what were the numbers of complete vehicles imported into and exported from Great Britain in the last eight quarters for which figures are available by Chrysler, Ford and Vauxhall.

Mr. Dell

The information is not available from official sources. Some relevant information is published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Mr. Miller

Will the Secretary of State accept that the importation of these vehicles is vital to continued success and the introduction of new models in these companies? Will he therefore resist strongly any suggestion that there should be import controls on motor vehicles from EEC sources?

Mr. Dell

We have no intention of replacing import controls on motor cars from EEC sources. The imports of the three companies to which the hon. Member refers together represent about 4 per cent. of the total United Kingdom motor car market.

Mr. Shersby

Is it a fact that these figures are not available from official sources? If so, will the Secretary of State take steps to ensure that such figures are in future available from official sources rather than from a third party?

Mr. Dell

What the hon. Member for Bromsgrove and Redditch (Mr. Miller) was asking for were figures relating to individual companies, which are not contained in official statistics. The SMMT does, however, give figures for individual companies.
