§ 21. Mr. Buchananasked the Secretary of State for the Environment on how many occasions the National Freight Integration Council has met since January 1970; and how many proposals for freight integration have been submitted by the council to his Department.
§ Mr. CarmichaelThe National Freight Integration Council has met twice since January 1970. No proposals for freight integration have been submitted.
§ Mr. BuchananIs my hon. Friend not exceedingly concerned that this high-level and independent council should be so moribund at a time when freight transport should be planned, integrated and streamlined in the best interests of the nation? Will my hon. Friend dismiss the council and set up another body which is much more keenly attuned to the necessity and urgency of freight integration?
§ Mr. CarmichaelYes. My hon. Friend will recall that the Select Committee which examined the nationalised industries recommended the abolition of the council. That would mean legislation. We are considering the functions of the NFIC and how the Select Committee's recommendations can most effectively be fulfilled.
