HC Deb 23 July 1975 vol 896 c709

Lords Amendment: No. 7, in page 10, line 23, leave out "or 47" and insert "47, 48 or 49".

Dr. Summerskill

I beg to move, That this House doth agree with the Lords in the said amendment.

The purpose and effect of the amendment is to ensure that offences in connection with lotteries and similar activities, such as amusements with prizes provided at village fetes and on the pier at the seaside, are all liable to the same penalties under the Bill. The Bill in relation to all these various offences will exclude imprisonment on summary trial and allow a maximum fine of£400. On indictment the maximum penalty as provided by the Bill is two years' imprisonment or a fine, or both. These are the penalties which it is now customary to adopt in relation to offences against the gambling laws.

Question put and agreed to.
