HC Deb 14 July 1975 vol 895 c1048
17. Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he is now in a position to report on the exploration programme into mineral resources in Wales undertaken by the Natural Environment Research Council and commenced in 1972.

Mr. Kaufman

The Institute of Geological Sciences publishes the results of this programme as the work proceeds. Reports have so far been published on surveys carried out in Central Wales and North Wales. The work is continuing.

Mr. Hooson

Does the Minister agree that this is important work in view of our balance of payments problem and the current high world price of resources? Are the reports which have been received encouraging?

Mr. Kaufman

It is a little early to say. I agree with the hon. and learned Gentleman that this work is important. That is why the Government decided to extend the survey by a further two years.
