§ 10. Mr. Donald Stewartasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he can now announce the result of his review of grant and loan limits for crofter housing.
§ The Under-Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. Hugh D. Brown)I have nothing to add to the reply which was given to the hon. Member on 28th January 1975.
§ Mr. StewartIn view of the time that has elapsed since the last reply, I heard today's reply with great regret and concern. Is the Minister not becoming aware of the great dissatisfaction and concern in crofting counties, with the escalating costs of building and the gap betwen the deposit and what a house will cost? Will he deal with that question, which is now overdue for a solution?
§ Mr. BrownAs the hon. Gentleman knows, loans are available up to £3,000, and the rate of interest, at 3⅛ per cent., 1467 plus a grant of £2,300, is a substantial subsidisation.
My noble Friend the Minister of State is to meet the Western Isles Islands Council later this month and he will be happy to discuss any outstanding problems in the area.
§ Mr. MacCormickFor how much longer must we wait for a Bill to reform the whole business of crofting?
§ Mr. BrownThat matter does not relate to the Question that has been asked. If the hon. Gentleman wants an answer, he must put down a Question.
