§ 19. Mr. Hayhoeasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what contingency arrangements he is making for the holding of a referendum in the United Kingdom.
§ Dr. SummerskillNo elaborate preparations would be required. The arrangements could be made only in the light of the actual circumstances.
§ Mr. HayhoeIt is of significance that the Home Secretary has not answered this Question. As the Prime Minister has indicated that it is almost certain that there will be a referendum on the Common Market, perhaps the hon. Lady will find out from her right hon. Friend whether it is equally almost certain that the Home Secretary will resign again on this issue.
§ Dr. SummerskillAs the hon. Gentleman knows, in our election manifesto we are committed, following renegotiation of the terms of entry into the Common Market, to consult the British people, by either a General Election or a referendum.
§ Mr. William HamiltonWill my hon. Friend give an assurance that if there should be a referendum on this matter she will consult me as to the terms of the questions to be put?
