HC Deb 19 March 1974 vol 870 cc840-1
15. Mr. Madel

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what plans he has for improving and strengthening the Motor Council, with a view to creating greater harmony in the motor industry.

Mr. Booth

The council, which is an independent joint body, has recently agreed on new machinery to give assistance in resolving disputes and to discussions aimed at identifying the underlying causes of problems in the industry. I welcome this strengthening of the council's functions.

Mr. Madel

Does the Minister intend to incorporate this council into the new conciliation and arbitration service? If greater use is to be made of the Motor Council, will the Minister arrange to have its reports published regularly?

Mr. Booth

The council is essentially a voluntary body and the Department has no power to intervene in its working arrangements. We shall maintain the informal contacts that have been established with the council and if through those we can discuss with the council the publication of its reports, we shall be glad to do so.
