HC Deb 21 June 1974 vol 875 cc947-8

Motion made, and Question proposed, That Standing Committee B be discharged from considering the Abortion (Amendment) Bill and that the Bill be committed to a Committee of the whole House.—[Mr. Grylls.]

Hon. Members

Object.

Mr. Deputy Speaker

The motion is not agreed to.

Mr. Michael Grylls (Surrey, North-West)

On a point of order, Mr. Deputy Speaker. May I seek your guidance on this matter? Although I am in no way seeking to suggest that the objection is in any way without the procedures of this House—I appreciate that it is not—this Bill has had a Second Reading and my understanding is, that being the position, that it means that this House wishes to consider it in Committee. All that this motion does—

Mr. Deputy Speaker

Order. I am sorry to inform the hon. Gentleman that that is not a point of order. It is not a matter that the Chair can answer.

Mr. Leslie Spriggs (St. Helens)

May I raise a matter on the same subject, Mr. Deputy Speaker? The hon. Member for Surrey, North-West (Mr. Grylls) has the support of hon. Members on both sides of the House and of the people in the country in general—

Mr. Deputy Speaker

Order. I must explain that we are dealing with unopposed business. I cannot take that point of order.
