§ 24. Mr. Blakerasked the Minister of Defence whether he is now able to give a firm undertaking to provide a system for transmitting British television programmes to the British Forces and their families in Germany; and when he expects work to start.
§ Mr. William RodgersI cannot at present add to the Written Answer given by my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary 205 of State for Defence for the Royal Air Force to the hon. Member on 22nd May.—[Vol. 874, c. 200.]
§ Mr. BlakerWill the Minister of State confirm that he is aware of the feasibility study carried out by the Conservative Government into this project, which showed that it could be put into effect? Does he agree that this is one of the most important projects that one could imagine from the point of view of the morale of our forces in Germany, especially at a time when so many of the men are doing emergency tours in Northern Ireland? Will he see whether at least a start can be made on this project this year?
§ Mr. RodgersYes, indeed. I know the hon. Gentleman's close personal interest in this matter. I am aware of the discussions and investigations which took place last year. I entirely agree that we should try to bring them to fruition very soon indeed.
§ Mrs. DunwoodyWill my hon. Friend do what he can to facilitate this service, because the job that is being done by the Royal Air Force in Germany is an extremely good one? The 1,000 people who visited RAF Gatow on Sunday showed that the Berliners certainly admired and understood the great contribution being made to their safety by the Royal Air Force.
§ Mr. RodgersI am sure that my hon. Friend's remarks will be much appreciated.
