HC Deb 10 April 1974 vol 872 cc414-5
15. Mr. Rifkind

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will make a statement on the policy of Her Majesty's Government towards grant-aided schools in Scotland.

The Under-Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. Robert Hughes)

My right hon. Friend is considering the future of the grant-aided schools in Scotland but he is not yet ready to make a statement.

Mr. Rifkind

Will the Minister assure us that before any change in policy towards the grant-aided schools is announced there will be the fullest consultation with the grant-aided schools to try to ensure, as far as possible, that there will not be the inconvenience and disruption that were caused by the last Labour administration's change of policy in this respect?

Mr. Hughes

We shall certainly consult the grant-aided schools, but it will be about how the policy will operate in integration and not about whether such a policy is necessary.

Mr. Monro

What increase in grant will be paid this year, and when?

Mr. Hughes

I cannot answer that without notice.
