§ 30. Mr. Raphael Tuckasked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has decided to modify in any way the plans he originally approved for the A41(M) and the North Orbital Extension from Maple Cross to Hunton Bridge.
§ Mr. TuckDoes the Minister realise that his present proposals are causing alarm and despondency among the people of Watford? Why does he consistently and stubbornly still refuse to meet a delegation from Watford Borough Council—the people whose lives are affected by this decision—in order at least to hear their views and to consider their alternative proposals?
§ Mr. SpeedThe council advanced its views very strongly at the public inquiry. Those views were considered by the inspector, and considered in great detail 409 by my right hon. Friend. That is why there is really no point in going over them again.
§ Sir Gilbert LongdenDoes my hon. Friend understand that there is great alarm and despondency elsewhere than in Watford, namely, in my constituency and in the Hertfordshire County Council? This road is being driven flat through between two schools. Will my hon. Friend kindly reconsider the matter?
§ Mr. SpeedI understand the concern my hon. Friend mentions, but we are taking the greatest steps to see that this road is environmentally as attractive as possible—and this will be helped by the legislation currently before the House.
