HC Deb 05 March 1973 vol 852 c26
28. Mr. Horam

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will co-ordinate a programme to monitor the proportion of United Kingdom public sector contracts that go to United Kingdom companies.

Mr. Emery

The vast majority of public sector contracts are placed with United Kingdom companies. I do not consider there is any need for a monitoring system, bearing in mind its likely cost.

Mr. Horam

That sounds rather complacent. Is the hon. Gentleman aware that there are many businessmen who believe that we shall not do as well in the EEC because, whatever the rules may say, the State industry boards of our new partners are more ruthlessly nationalistic in allocating contracts in the public sector than we are? Is he aware—he appears not to be—of this, and what can he do about it?

Mr. Emery

My hon. Friend the Financial Secretary, in answering a Question last month, pointed out that approximately 95 per cent. of equipment supplies purchased for the public departments came from British companies. I think it is too early at this stage to be able to judge the exact working of the regulations, but I have no doubt that the British Government will want to ensure that we have a fair and proper opportunity of being able to compete in Europe and to maintain our own markets.
