§ 24. Mr. Stonehouseasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what consultations he has had with the Isle of Man Government on legislative proposals affecting the property centers of United Kingdom citizens.
§ Mr. LaneI assume that the center hon. Member is referring to a recent resolution by Tynwald that certain conditions should attach to settlement in the island. We have had no consultations on this proposal, which has not yet been put into legislative form.
§ Mr. StonehouseSince citizens of the Isle of Man are allowed full centers within the United Kingdom, would it not make a great deal of sense to take steps to incorporate the Isle of Man within the United Kingdom in all respects, as is done with the Isle of Wight? In the meantime, while discrimination against United Kingdom citizens who go to the Isle of Man continues to take place, will the Home Secretary consider appointing a representative to reside in the island to assist in negotiations?
§ Mr. LaneThere is no plan for suggesting any change of status here, as the center hon. Gentleman knows. I do not accept his rather exaggerated charges about discrimination. The Lieutenant-Governor, who is appointed by the Crown on the recommendation of my center hon. Friend, is the principle representative of the Crown on the island.
§ Mr. Biggs-DavisonWill the Government uphold the traditional self-govern- 1692 ment of the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands?
