HC Deb 18 July 1973 vol 860 c625

Lords Amendment: No. 1, in page 11, line 33, at end insert: ( ) to methods of salesmanship employed in dealing with consumers, or".

10.14 p.m.

The Minister for Trade and Consumer Affairs (Sir Geoffrey Howe)

I beg to move, That this House doth agree with the Lords in the said amendment.

This Lords amendment— [Interruption.]

Mr. Speaker

Order. May we have a little more silence, please?

Sir G. Howe

This Lords amendment is to Clause 13 which, hon. Members will remember, was much debated in Standing Committee. At that stage we identified one area of omission, namely, packaging, as one which ought to be covered by way of amendment. We then looked at the scope of the clause as it stood to see whether anything else had been omitted. We came to the conclusion that there might be some doubt whether promotion as defined in paragraph (c), would cover patter by salesmen and other kinds of representation by salesmen. It is for that reason that we have extended the scope of the clause by this Lords amendment to ensure beyond doubt that oral and written representations connected with promotion and sales come within the definition of matters covered by the clause.
