§
Lords Amendment: No. 37, after Clause 102, in page 75, line 15, at end insert new Clause D—
D. In section 36(1) of the Act of 1956, in the definition of "inter-connected bodies corporate", after the words "all other bodies corporate which are its subsidiaries within the meaning of section one hundred and fifty-four of the Companies Act 1948" there shall be inserted the words "or (in the case of an industrial and provident society) within the meaning of section 15 of the Friendly and Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1968".
§ Sir G. HoweI beg to move, That this House doth agree with the Lords in the said amendment.
This is another amendment relating to the position of industrial and provident societies in the co-operative field. Its effect is to extend the concept of a group, as embodied in the magic phrase "interconnected bodies corporate" for an industrial and provident society and its subsidiaries.
This is a logical step to take. It is in response to an amendment moved in Committee.
§ Mr. John Roper (Farnworth)I support what my hon. Friend the Member for Greenock (Dr. Dickson Mabon) said 640 earlier. The co-operative movement very much welcomes this technical amendment, along with the amendments made in Committee. In the submissions made to the Department we pointed out that this was an important correction which should be made. We are glad that it has been possible to do this in another place.
